The site is a little ugly, but it's otherwise pretty well executed. There are two ways to get a ringtone:
1. Create your own ringtone from an mp3
- Select an mp3 from your computer and it uploads to their servers
- They present a really great UI showing the entire song with the waveform. You can select any part of the song you want by dragging the selection window, change the length of that selection, and add fades. Just like in iTunes and Garage Band.
- Click "Create" and it downloads an iphone ready ringtone instantly, already tagged with all the right id3 info (as found in your original mp3)
2. Or just do a search
They have a huge library of ringtones all ready to go. It's a really easy way to get a bunch of ringtones in just seconds. Not sure how this is legal though :)

Court papers suggest that Ritz Cameras owes over $40 million to its two largest creditors: Nikon's US subsidiary Nikon Inc. and Canon USA, with a further $8.4 million owed to Fujifilm USA, a subsidiary of which owns around a third of the company. To put the $26.6 million owed to Nikon Inc. into perspective, it would represent somewhere in the region of 20% of Nikon Inc's expected annual operating income.

Ritz camera/Wolf camera has always been at the bottom of the barrel when it comes time to purchase camera equipment. Bad service, high prices, weak warranties... They are the Circuit City of camera gear. The loss of jobs is sad, but they need to make way for the modern era of retail.
But it really sucks when they take down other companies with them.

OSX on Vaio P
An enterprising Vaio P user, "DaHarder," seems to have gotten Leopard running on it, though not everything works. This creates a Mac that weighs 1.4 pounds, has a full-size keyboard, and fits in a (large) pocket.
Unfortunately, it's referenced only obliquely, from another thread. DaHarder, if you're reading, tell us how you did it!

Thanks to All our Presidents...
... on this President's Day.
I find it sobering to keep in mind what Ben Franklin cautioned:
"…there is no Form of Government but what may be a Blessing to the People if well administred (sic); and I believe farther that this is likely to be well adminstred (sic) for a Course of Years, and can only end in Despotism as other Forms have done before it, when the People shall become so corrupted as to need Despotic Government, being incapable of any other." (From Benjamin Franklin: Speech in the Convention on the Constitution, unpublished, September 17, 1787)[1]
Let's all remember to participate, as fully as possible, to be sure Our Presidency does not fail as it has the past eight years.

Visual clutter detection: MIT researchers have designed a software tool that measures "visual clutter." According to the scientists, the system could someday help designers create better displays, maps, and data visualizations and steer our attention in various ways. The prototype tool, written in MATLAB, is freely available here. From the MIT News Office:
"We lack a clear understanding of what clutter is, what features, attributes and factors are relevant, why it presents a problem and how to identify it," said Ruth Rosenholtz, principal research scientist in MIT's Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences (BCS) and the paper's lead author.
The fact that one person's clutter is the next person's organized workspace makes it hard to come up with a universal measure of clutter. Rosenholtz and colleagues modeled what makes items in a display harder or easier to pick out. They used this model, which incorporates data on color, contrast and orientation, to come up with a software tool to measure visual clutter.
To be useful, such a tool has to capture the effect of clutter on performance. In their paper, Rosenholtz and her colleagues-- MIT BCS graduate student Yuanzhen Li and BCS undergraduate Lisa Nakano--tested the influence of clutter on searching for a symbol in a map, like an arrow indicating "you are here." They found good correlation between the time it takes to find a symbol in a map and the amount of clutter according to their measure.
